    UPDATE ON GEMS REFERALS

In communication previously received from the scheme, it stated that GEMS patients should nominate a family practitioner for (amongst other things) specialist referrals. This was scheduled to happen latest by 2 April 2015.

After engaging with the various stakeholders since then, the GEMS Board of Trustees have reassessed the idea and decide to postpone the implementation of the referral system for the remainder of 2015.

It means that the 30% co-payment scheduled for implementation on 2 April 2015, will also not be applicable until further notice. The benefit options for GEMS patients on the Ruby, Emerald and Onyx thus remains unchanged. Please note that the specialist referral arrangements for GEMS patients on the Sapphire and Beryl members will not be affected by this decision and current processes remain enforced. GEMS indicated that the nomination of a family practitioner will still remain important in their coordination of care initiative and patients are encouraged to start looking at the possible options for their family practitioners.
